General Terms

Female Genital Mutilation

The intentional removal of all or part of the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons.

The same as female genital mutilation. In recent years, some refer to the practice as cutting, while others use mutilation.

The outer skin of the vulva; one on either side of the vulva. The general term means ‘greater lips’.

The two folds of mucous membrane within the labia majora. The general term means ‘lesser lips’.

 

A small, sensitive, erectile organ at the upper end of the vulva.

The cutting of all or part of the foreskin of the male sexual organ. This should not be mistaken for FGM or FGC.

Glossary of Football Terminology

American Football Terms

The series of games that are played in the Football Association prior to the regular football season. These games are exhibition games to determine which players are suitable to make the teams. This gives an opportunity to the newly drafted players to exhibit their talents to the owners and coaches.

The game in which the 2 best teams in the Football Association contend for the title of the annual championship.

In the Football Association, there are 4 teams in each division. The 32 teams make up 8 divisions. The 4 teams in each division contend during the regular season for the title of their division, by winning the most games within that division.

In the Football Association, the teams that win the majority of their games within their division and conference obtain home field- advantage. These teams have the advantage of hosting their post-season games, rather than going on the road to play in other teams’ stadiums.

In the Football Association, a week of rest is given to each team during the regular season. A team does not play on its bye-week.

The series of games that are played in the post-season of the Football Association. The first round of playoffs begin the process of elimination of the teams until there are 4 teams to contend in the Championship game; from which the 2 teams will be determined for the Big Bowl.

When the offense of a team fails to gain a first down (the 10-yard line) after 3 tries in the game; that team punts (kicks) the ball away to the offense of the opposing team.

The game which is played after the Big Bowl by the best selected players in the Football Association. It is only an exhibition game.

The football field is a total of 100 yards from one end zone to the other. It is divided into sections of 10 yards. Each “first down” equals 10 yards.

When a quarterback completes 4 out of the 6 passes, he throws to his receivers. The term may also be used when a receiver catches 4 out of the 6 balls thrown to him.

At the end of a game or at the end of the season, the most valuable player is determined by his performance in a particular game or his performance during the entire season.

A football player whose position is to run with the ball and gain yardage after the ball is handed to him by his quarterback.

The player that throws the ball to Wide Receivers or passes the ball to Running Backs. He sometimes calls the plays in the huddle, or his coach calls the plays to him.

The players that are on the field during a kick-off, a punt or on-side kick are the Special Teams players.

One who plays on the Defense. His duty is to prevent the offense of the opposing team from scoring and obtaining yardage.

When the quarterback of a team hands the ball to his running back with the object of obtaining yardage or a score.

Competitive Football Association.

The score in a football game, which is the result of the player entering the end-zone. A touchdown gains 6 points, after which the kicker tries for an extra point by kicking the ball through the upright goal posts.

The football field is 100 yards in length, from one end-zone to the other. Within the 100-yard radius, there are 5 ten-yard sections on each side of the field. Half of the field is 50 yards from either side of it. The team has to make it to a 10-yard line with each play to gain a first down. There are 3 tries to make a first down. If the team fails to make the first down, that team punts the ball to the opposite team on 4th down.

Their role in the game is to protect the quarterback from the Defense of the opponent. They also block and protect running backs.

When the referee flips the coin prior to the start of the game to determine which team’s offense will begin the game. The team that selects the side of the coin (heads or tails) that is shown when the referee tosses it to the ground, that team’s offense begins the game, while the opposing team’s defense takes the field.

The center of the field.

In the story, when the San Antonio Gorillas crossed over the 50-yard line, they entered the Sacramento Cheetahs’ territory.

The game consists of 4 quarters. Each quarter has 15 minutes.  When it is late in the quarter, only a few minutes remain in the quarter.

The break time in the game after half of the game has been played; the players and coaches retreat to their locker rooms to strategize rest and confer.

A field goal is worth 3 points. A team’s offense is allowed to kick a field goal when they do not convert on 3rd down to make a 1st down. If that team is within field goal range, they will attempt a field goal. Some field goals can be kicked from as far as 60 yards to 20 yards or less.
